KarmaLead Core Leadership
Competencies
Personal Mastery
“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly
worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of
ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”
-George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman: a Comedy and a Philosophy
Personal mastery is defined as “the discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision,
of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively” (Senge, 2006).
Personal mastery assumes self-understanding and self-knowledge. It also assumes a certain awareness
of our purpose in life. Without formulating our aim, we drift aimlessly amidst the sea of life, like a ship
without a rudder.
Therefore, developing a clear vision for your leadership and defining your core values are critically
important to your leadership. We begin the journey by answering the first key leadership question –
“Who am I?” .
Key skills in developing personal mastery
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ)
Emotional Intelligence is your capacity as a leader to recognize your own feelings and those of
others, for motivating yourself, and for managing emotions well to build strong relationships.
With a high EQ you have a high level of self-awareness, excellent social skills, and you
demonstrate empathy.
PERSEVERANCE
In the face of adversity and resistance, you are able to stick with it by going back a second, third
or fourth time. It is about using a variety of ways to get things done. Winston Churchill famously
noted that, “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”
