Katzenbach and Smith in their book u201cThe Wisdom of Teamsu201d (1993) defined a real team as u201ca small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.u201d u00a0Katzenbach and Smith went on to identify three critical categories for complementary skills for teams to be high-performing teams:

  1. Team members must have the technical and functional expertise;
  2. Teamsu2019 must be able to solve problems and make effective decisions, and
  3. Teams must have excellent interpersonal skills.(Katzenbach & Smith, 1999)
